A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to expecting mothers and new moms during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. They offer continuous support and guidance to help mothers have a positive birth experience and navigate the challenges of early motherhood. Doulas can provide comfort measures, help with breastfeeding, offer education and resources, and act as a non-medical companion throughout the journey.
There are numerous benefits of having a doula during childbirth. Research suggests that having a doula present can result in shorter labors, a lower likelihood of cesarean section, reduced use of pain medication, and increased satisfaction with the birth experience. Doulas provide continuous support, offer reassurance, and advocate for the mother's preferences, helping her feel more empowered and confident throughout the process.
The cost of hiring a doula can vary depending on factors such as location, the experience of the doula, and the services included. In general, the cost of hiring a doula can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. It's important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with potential doulas during the initial consultation to ensure transparency and clarity.
While some insurance plans may cover doula services, it's not universally guaranteed. However, it's worth checking with your insurance provider to inquire about potential coverage or reimbursement options. Additionally Calmmamma Doulas, offer sliding scale fees or payment plans to make our services more accessible. Exploring these options can help you find a doula within your budget.
Doula services are eligible for reimbursement with flexible spending accounts (FSA), health savings accounts (HSA), and health reimbursement accounts (HRA) with a letter of medical necessity.
The duration of doula services can vary depending on the doula and the specific package or arrangement you choose. Generally, doula support starts during pregnancy and continues through labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. The exact timeline will be discussed and agreed upon with your doula based on your individual needs and preferences. On average we work with families 6 to 8 weeks.

Placental encapsulation is the practice of ingesting the placenta after it has been steamed, dehydrated, ground, and placed into pills. The placenta is the organ that surrounds the fetus in the womb and allows for the exchange of nutrients, blood, and waste with the mother. The custom of consuming the placenta, often in a pill form via the process of placental encapsulation, is centuries old, practiced most often in Chinese medicine.
*this process takes up to 4 weeks
The Yoni steam process involves sitting over a steaming pot of herb-infused water, generally for about 10-30 minutes per session depending on your body’s constitution and menstrual cycle history. As the steam rises and the herbs penetrate vaginal tissue, it is thought that the vagina and uterus are cleansed and soothed.

Belly binding is the tradition of wrapping the postpartum belly 2-4 days after a vaginal birth (or 10 days to 2 weeks after a cesarean birth). A long cloth is used to wrap the belly in the lower pelvic area up to the belly button. The wrapping is typically done daily, for 6 weeks, to provide physical support for the new mother. Many women describe it feeling like a big hug, which provides emotional support as well.
